Conference
The Society holds conferences at different venues along the river. The themes are chosen to reflect concerns or interests of the moment.
Conference: 21 February 2009
Shiplake College, Henley-on-Thames
The Future of the Thames: Challenges of the 21st Century'
The overall objective of the 2009 River Thames Society Conference was to look in depth at the various challenges there will be to the River Thames in the 21st Century. Climate change and its consequential effect on the River generally will have a long lead in time and is likely to threaten the well being of the Thames we know and love. Ever increasing financial stringency in the public sector could also lead to another century of under investment in the Thames. The Conference sought to put all this in context and from it we would hope to draw up an action plan of what needs to be done in the short and longer terms.
Principal speakers included:
Lord Smith Chairman, Environment Agency
Dr Nick Reynard CEH Wallingford
Peter Quarmby Flood and Coastal Risk Manager, Environment Agency
Theresa May MP Member of Parliament for Maidenhead
Ian Trenholm, Chief Executive, Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead
Richard Aylard, CVO, BSc. Special Advisor to the Chief Executive, Thames Water

Conference 2006
The Sea in the City
Date: Tuesday 6 June 2006
Venue: Fishmongers' Hall, London EC4R 9EL
This conference sought to start the largest public environmenal debate since the National Parks Legislation. With the environmental management of the non-tidal Thames historically secured through the River Thames Alliance and the Environment Agency's Waterways Plan, it's time to focus on the Tidal Challenge. The tidal Thames has no overall environmental manager and no environmental designation, so what hope the future?
